Shifting Imageries: Gentrification and the New Touristic Images of the Inner City of Palermo

2021

After the bombings of 1943, the historic centre of Palermo was left with several crumbling buildings and a social situation of some concern. Therefore, over the last sixty years, all kinds of representations of Palermo have revolved around the presence of criminal organizations and the risks of living in the most dangerous areas of the city (including the city centre). These representations started to change around the beginning of the new century when the inner city of Palermo underwent an intense process of redefinition of its territorial identity. Several key factors may be used to explain this process: from traditional economic reasons concerning gentrification and touristification, to …

Sustainability, Territorial Resources and Social Capital

2017

In Italy, in the last two decades, new methods of intervention in planning and land policies have been used, which focused more and more on territorial government, governance, development, cohesion and environmental sustainability. One of the main factors that has contributed to the dissatisfaction of the residents is the lack of quality in the towns, which has been more and more characterized by urban decay and by lack of services and gathering places. Giving back environmental, economic and social quality to degraded areas or recovering abandoned public spaces responds definitely to the concept of sustainable city limiting urban sprawl and reducing environmental impacts inherent in the bu…

2017

Authors of neo-dialect songs choose dialect, on the one hand, because they need to find better metrical and rhythmic solutions, and, on the other, they wish to use an ‘alternative’ language to standard Italian. At the same time, their pro loco linguistic choice gives authors the chance to use the dialect as a symbol of microspace opposing the sense of estrangement and alienation caused by globalization. Thus, besides the linguistic «locality» expressed by means of dialect, we find another kind of locality, consisting in the authors’ constant reference to local settings, related to the space they live in, symbolizing the return to their own roots in opposition to the global village. Of cours…

Cantari e Cuntari: tradizione e modernità nella canzone dialettale siciliana

2017

A twofold commodification of 'place' in hotel websites and its consequences for the discursive creation of a tourist identity.

2016

Tourism is a global cultural industry and one of the world’s largest international trades (Thurlow & Jaworski, 2011). As far as tourism is understood as an agent and channel of globalisation (Pritchard & Jaworski, 2005), it makes sense to investigate it from a critical perspective and analyse how its discourse shapes the tourist experience. The aim of this study is to explore ways in which hotel websites project a place identity for the hotel and, in doing so, for the town or city in which the hotel is located. I will ask how, and in what ways, this representation relies on socio-cultural conventions, which in turn may influence the discursive construction of the social actor “tourist”. Usi…
